वाराणसी विश्व के प्राचीनतम सतत आवासीय शहरों में से एक है।

मध्य गंगा घाटी में पहली आर्य बस्ती यहाँ का आरम्भिक इतिहास है। दूसरी सहस्राब्दी तक वाराणसी आर्य धर्म एवं दर्शन का एक प्रमुख स्थल रहा।

ऐतिहासिक आलेखों से प्रमाणित होता है कि ईसा पूर्व की छठी शताब्दी में वाराणसी भारतवर्ष का बड़ा ही समृद्धशाली और महत्त्वपूर्ण राज्य था। मध्य युग में यह कन्नौज राज्य का अंग था और बाद में बंगाल के पाल नरेशों का इस पर अधिकार हो गया था। सन् 1194 में शहाबुद्दीन ग़ोरी ने इस नगर को लूटा और क्षति पहुँचायी। मुग़ल काल में इसका नाम बदल कर मुहम्मदाबाद रखा गया। बाद में इसे अवध दरबार के प्रत्यक्ष नियंत्रण में रखा गया। बलवंत सिंह ने बक्सर की लड़ाई में अंग्रेज़ों का साथ दिया और इसके उपलक्ष्य में वाराणसी को अवध दरबार से स्वतंत्र कराया। सन् 1911 में अंग्रेज़ों ने महाराज प्रभुनारायण सिंह को वाराणसी का राजा बना दिया। सन् 1950 में यह राज्य स्वेच्छा से भारतीय गणराज्य में शामिल हो गया। वाराणसी विभिन्न मत-मतान्तरों की संगम स्थली रही है। विद्या के इस पुरातन और शाश्वत नगर ने सदियों से धार्मिक गुरुओं, सुधारकों और प्रचारकों को अपनी ओर आकृष्ट किया है। भगवान बुद्ध और शंकराचार्य के अलावा रामानुज, वल्लभाचार्य, संत कबीर, गुरु नानक, तुलसीदास, चैतन्य महाप्रभु, रैदास आदि अनेक संत इस नगरी में आये।



भारतीय स्वातंत्रता आंदोलन में भी वाराणसी सदैव अग्रणी रही है। राष्ट्रीय आंदोलन में काशी हिन्दू विश्वविद्यालय के छात्रों का योगदान स्मरणीय है। इस नगरी को क्रांतिकारी सुशील कुमार लाहिड़ी, अमर शहीद चंद्रशेखर आज़ाद तथा जितेद्रनाथ सान्याल सरीखे वीर सपूतों को जन्म देने का गौरव प्राप्त है। महामना पंडित मदनमोहन मालवीय जैसे विलक्षण महापुरुष के अतिरिक्त राजा शिव प्रसाद गुप्त, बाबूराव विष्णु पराड़कर, श्री प्रकाश, डॉ. भगवान दास, लाल बहादुर शास्त्री, डॉ. संपूर्णानंद, कमलेश्वर प्रसाद, मन्मथनाथ गुप्त, मुकुटबिहारी लाल जैसे महापुरुषों का स्वतंत्रता संग्राम में योगदान इतिहास में स्वर्णाक्षरों में अंकित रहेगा। वाराणसी (काशी) की प्राचीनता का इतिहास वैदिक साहित्य में भी उपलब्ध होता है। वैदिक साहित्य के तीनों स्तरों (संहिता, ब्राह्मण एवं उपनिषद) में वाराणसी का विवरण मिलता है। वैदिक साहित्य में कहा है कि आर्यों का एक काफिला विदेध माथव के नेतृत्व में आधुनिक उत्तर प्रदेश के मध्य से सदानीरा अथवा गंडक के किनारे जा पहुँचा और वहाँ कोशल जनपद की नींव पड़ी।


जब आर्यों ने उत्तर भारत पर अधिकार कर लिया तो आर्यों की एक जाति कासिस ने वाराणसी के समीप 1400 से 1000 ई. पू. के मध्य अपने को स्थापित किया। वाराणसी का सर्वप्रथम उल्लेख अथर्ववेद की पैप्पलाद शाखा में हुआ है। एक मंत्र में मंत्रकार एक रोगी से कहता है कि उसका ‘तक्मा (ज्वर) दूर हो जाए और ज्वर का प्रसार काशी, कोशल और मगध जनपदों में हो। इससे स्पष्ट है कि इस काल में ये तीनों जनपद पार्श्ववर्ती थे। शतपथ ब्राह्मण के एक उद्धरण के अनुसार भरत ने सत्वत लोगों के साथ व्यवहार किया था उसी प्रकार सत्राजित के पुत्र शतानिक ने काशीवासियों के पवित्र यज्ञीय अश्व को पकड़ लिया था। शतानिक ने इसी अश्व द्वारा अपना अश्वमेध यज्ञ पूरा किया। इस घटना के परिणामस्वरूप काशीवासियों ने अग्निकर्म और अग्निहोत्र करना ही छोड़ दिया था। मोतीचंद्र काशीवासियों में वैदिक प्रक्रियायों के प्रति तिरस्कार की भावना है। वे तीसरी सदी ई.पू. के पहले वाराणसी के धार्मिक महत्त्व की बात स्वीकार नहीं करते। वैदिक साहित्य में वाराणसी और अन्य जनपदों के परस्पर संबंधों पर भी प्रकाश पड़ता है।

कौषीतकी उपनिषद में काश्यों और विदेहों के नाम का एक स्थान पर उल्लेख है। वृहदारण्यक उपनिषद् में अजातशत्रु इसको काशी अथवा विदेह का शासक कहा गया है। इसके अतिरिक्त शांखायन और बौधायन श्रोतसूत्र में भी काशी तथा विदेह का पास-पास उल्लेख हुआ है। स्वतंत्र राज्यसत्ता नष्ट हो जाने के पश्चात् काशी के कोशल राज्य में सम्मिलित हो जाने का भी उल्लेख मिलता है। काशी, कोशल का सर्वप्रथम उल्लेख गोपथ ब्राह्मण में आया है। पतंजलि के महाभाष्य में काशीकोशलीया (काशी कोशल संबंधी) उदाहरण के रूप में उद्धृत है। वाराणसी के संबंध में उपर्युक्त उल्लेखों से यह सुस्पष्ट है कि वैदिक साहित्य में इसका उल्लेख अपेक्षाकृत बाद में मिलता है। लेकिन हम यह निश्चयपूर्वक कह सकते हैं कि वाराणसी एक प्राचीन नगरी है क्योंकि अथर्ववेद में वरणावती नदी का उद्धरण है और इसी के नाम पर वाराणसी का नामकरण हुआ। वैदिक साहित्य में उल्लेखित वाराणसी का कोशल और विदेह से संबंध तथा कुरु और पांचाल से शत्रुता, संभवत: राजनीतिक और सांस्कृतिक दोनों अंतर्विरोधों का परिणाम था।
