Bhagavad Gita, Chapter 2, Verse 28

"Avyaktādīni bhūtāni vyaktamadhyāni bhārata
Avyakta-nidhanānyeva tatra kā paridevanā"

Translation in English:

"All created beings are unmanifest in their beginning, manifest in their interim state, and unmanifest again when they are annihilated. So what need is there for lamentation?"

Meaning in Hindi:

"सभी प्राणी अपने प्रारंभिक अवस्था में अदृश्य होते हैं, मध्य अवस्था में व्यक्त होते हैं और उन्हें नष्ट होने पर फिर से अदृश्य हो जाते हैं। तो शोक करने की क्या आवश्यकता है?"

In this verse, Lord Krishna explains the cyclical nature of existence. He states that all created beings go through a cycle of manifestation and non-manifestation. They are unmanifest in the beginning, manifest in their temporary state and unmanifest again at destruction. 
 Lord Krishna discusses the futility of complaining in the face of its cyclical nature. He questions the need for mourning because all beings, including us, go through a process of manifestation and embodiment. The verse emphasizes the transient and ever-changing nature of the material world. All beings, including the physical bodies we inhabit, go through stages of existence. They are born, take form, and finally die, only to rise again in a new form.  



 Understanding this eternal cycle helps us gain a broader perspective on life. It reminds us that our present existence is but one step on an endless journey. Complaining about the changes and changes in life becomes unnecessary when we recognize the lifelessness of the material realm.  

 


 Lord Krishna's teaching in this verse encourages us to detach  from excessive attachment and identify with the temporary forms of the physical world. It invites us to focus on the eternal aspect of our being, the unchangeable in our souls. 
 Transcending the cycle of birth and death, we can develop a sense of serenity and acceptance. We realize that our true being is beyond the vicissitudes of life, and we can find comfort in knowing that we are part of a greater cosmic order.  This verse teaches us to embrace the impermanence of the material world and  prioritize our spiritual growth. It reminds us that our true identity is not limited to our present manifestation, but is part of a greater reality.  

 By aligning ourselves with the eternal nature of the soul, we can move through the ups and downs of life with greater wisdom and resilience. We can find peace and contentment knowing that our journey is part of the larger tapestry of existence.

The Old Route An Overview of Jainism

One of the world’s oldest religions, Jainism, has its roots in ancient India. This non-theistic religion stresses spiritual self-reliance and self-control as well as non-violence to all living beings. The ethical rigor of Jainism and its ascetic practices are often mentioned.

Jainism developed from the 7th to 5th century BCE in the Ganges valley of eastern India and shares a common ancestry with Hinduism and Buddhism reflecting contemporary spiritual and philosophical heterogeneity at that time. The founders of Jainism are called Tirthankaras; among them, Mahavira(599-527 BCE) is the most recent and best known. Mahavira is commonly placed as a contemporary with Buddha, while his teachings form tenets for Jain religious philosophy.

Main Laws:

  • Ahimsa (Non-Violence): Ahimsa is the primordial rule in Jain tradition which means harmlessness or non-violence towards anything that breathes whether by thought, speech, or action.
  • Anekantvad (Non Absolutism): It preaches that truth and reality are intricate matters that can be seen from various standpoints which will require openness in mind to accommodate different opinions.

Thus, the Bhagavad Gita offers deep insights into duty (Dharma) and righteousness, among other profound topics. It presents a dialogue between Arjuna, who is a prince and a warrior of the Kshatriya caste, and his charioteer Krishna. This long conversation, set on the Kurukshetra battlefield deals with ethical problems that arise in the life of Kshatriya warriors. The Bhagavad Gita not only answers Arjuna’s doubts but also gives general instructions for everybody about how to understand rightness or duty when facing adversities or conflicts.

The Role of the Warrior Class:

Historical Context:In the traditional Vedic society, it was their responsibility to be a warrior class who were expected to protect their kingdom and maintain justice. They had to show bravery as well as assume leadership roles for them to accomplish their duties. Its name “Kshatriya” itself comes from the Sanskrit word “kshatra,” which means power or authority indicating their responsibilities as preservers and upholders of the societal order.

Obligations and Duties:They were obliged to observe strict norms such as valorousness, dignity, and protection of the people they lead. Among these requirements are:

  • Protection of the Realm: Keeping the kingdom secure from external harm and maintaining internal peace.
  • Upholding Dharma: Ensuring equality and moral order in society.
  • Leadership in Battle: Directing armies into war as well as showcasing bravery and tactical ability.
  • Sacrifice and Selflessness: Being willing to give up one’s interests for the benefit of all people.
